A CHANGE OF HEART

Farewell

Saying goodbye is never easy. Bidding farewell to someone you love, someone of great importance leads to heartbreaks. These farewells that occur in relationships are usually due to a change of heart, a change of emotions. These farewells also cause a change of emotions in the other party; from happiness to sorrow. These farewells are one of the transformations that occur within us.

BYBLIS

by William-Adolphe Bouguereau

The story behind this painting is the Byblis myth where Byblis, a nymph, fell in love with her brother and confessed to him. Knowing of her feelings, he runs away from her, leaving her heartbroken (Carrasco, 2017b). This painting by William-Adolphe Bouguereau manages to capture Byblis as being heartbroken. The way the body was painted, how the body slouches over the spring, adds depth and elements to the feeling the painting is trying to portray. The way the artist illuminates Byblis in the painting highlights the sorrow felt by Byblis. This painting of Byblis manages to convey the sorrow felt, after being happily and naively in love, when her love left her.

OPHELIA

by John Everett Millais

This painting depicting Ophelia’s last moment. The story behind this painting is the love story between Hamlet and Ophelia (Carrasco, 2017b). The colours used made the setting look more magical. The way the artist paints her face as calm and how her hands are structured expresses the calmness of the setting. This painting displays how she committed suicide with a calm heart. This painting exhibits how her feelings changed; from feeling happy to feeling heartbroken, and then feeling calm as she took away her own life and left the world.
