A CHANGE IN THE ENVIRONMENT

Global Warming

Global Warming is an issue that we are currently facing. Our environment is constantly changing and transforming, in this case, for the worse. Global warming has caused sea level rise, heatwaves as well as endanger the animals. This is one of the transformations that is occurring in the world around us.

INCREASING FOREST FIRE

by Jill Pelto

At first glance, it may look like a simple watercolour painting of a forest fire. However, if given a closer look, the painting is based on the graph data of global temperature rise. This painting was meant to bring awareness of how as the temperature rises, forest fires would become more prominent and danger forest, animals, and us, humans (Segal, 2016). The artist uses different colours and different shades to recreate how a forest fire looks like, while working around the graph itself. This thus helps to bring awareness as to how global warming, the rapid change in global temperature, can change and transform the environment; for the worse.

LANDSCAPE OF CHANGE

by Jill Pelto

This painting is based on data of “sea level rise, glacier volume decline, increasing global temperatures, and the increasing use of fossil fuels” according to Jill Pelto (Segal, 2016). The data of the different environmental effect of climate change are represented differently and accordingly. The artist uses different colours and patterns to represent the data of the increasing use of fossil fuels is represented by fire. This makes the composition of the piece more interesting and colourful, as well as a little more abstract. This painting helps to bring into light the different issues, the different changes in the environment, that are caused by global warming, and emphasizes the fact of how all these are occurring at the same time.

HABITAT DEGRADATION: ARCTIC MELT

by Jill Pelto

This painting shows the information on the decline of Arctic Sea Ice (Segal, 2016). As seen in the painting, the graph is presented as an ice piece in which two Arctic foxes are standing on; one staring the viewer and the other in distress. Arctic foxes are one of the species of animals that are affected by the decrease in sea ice (Segal, 2016). The rapid decrease of sea ice that is caused by the increase global temperature makes the once ideal habitat become unsuitable for the animals which are unable to adjust to it. The artist was able to paint the Arctic foxes is a realistic way while showing the emotions of the foxes, which gives this painting an emotional appeal. As a result, this painting helps to appeal to the viewers to start doing something to stop this, to stop the change in their habitat, to stop global warming.
